Ortelli Artisan Road Bike 1970s
- Manufacturer: Ortelli
- Size: 54 cm
The glorious history of Ortelli bicycles began in 1921 in the Italian city of Faenza, where Vito Ortelli was born. Only six years later, his father Lazzaro Ortelli – who had been working for the Marabini factory – manufactured a very first exemplar of kids bicycle by adapting rims and tyres to a smaller size, which had not been produced yet. The step into a professional career happened in 1938, when Vito Ortelli left the family workshop where he had already worked as frame builder. His career was interrupted by the second world war during which he, together with Gino Bartali and other cyclists, joined the "Resistenza" against the Nazi occupation.
Checking his Palmarès you will find that he was a four time Italian champion – twice on the road and twice on the track – both times defeating Fausto Coppi! He also won several stages in the the Giro d'Italia (in 1946 he got the podium).
In 1952 Vito Ortelli retired from competitions to grab torch and files in the family atelier in Faenza. His works soon became renowned amongst enthusiasts for an unmistakable attention to details and elegant carved lugs and parts – he was so meticulous that he also manufactured tools and jigs hisself. The decorative elements on the Ortelli frames are deeply rooted in the traditional ceramic ornaments of the the Faenza region.
Not only became his workshop a showcase of unique frames but also a meeting point for many enthusiasts who were keen to stare at Ortelli's masterpieces.
Vito also gave important technical advise on lug design to his friend Cino Cinelli and worked closely together with Patelli and Marastoni
Vito Ortelli always chose quality rather than quantity. During sixty years, the workshop only produced roughly 5000 frames, with several requests coming from American and Japanese customers.
The 1970s Ortelli is exactly one of those perfect bicycles. Arrived at Steel Vintage Bikes in original, unrestored condition, this double-butted steel frame illustrates the typical attention to detail of Ortelli's works. The finely carved lugs and parts make this bicycle particularly decorated, yet very elegant.
Regarding the components, this bicycle is equipped with a Campagnolo Nuovo Record groupset, a Brooks saddle and Nisi rims.
This Ortelli is not a simple bicycle. It is a piece of Italian craftsmanship and cycling history. For true connoisseurs.
