After a 20-year break, a racer who achieved the Giro-Vuelta double is now back to brazing steel frames, just like he used to do before aluminium and carbon became the de facto standard for bicycle production. Working with the original process, the dusted off machinery and old craftsmen, Giovanni Battaglin is reviving his legacy.
In an era in which mass production has been dominating the market for decades, Giovanni Battaglin and his son Alessandro are against the tide. "Officina" is the Italian word for "workshop". It's the place where Battaglin's craftsmen have spent most of their life perfecting the way they work with steel. They have boosted their skills making bikes on a daily basis, trying to find out the right formulas, the secrets crucial to the great ride quality cyclists seek. That's why every step of the frame building process, from tube trimming to painting, still takes place in an "Officina" in in Marostica, Vicenza, Northern Italy.
So proud and convinced are they in the quality of their frames, that Officina Battaglin gives them a "One Million Miles Warranty" which covers any defects in materials and workmanship and is also transferable to further owners, no matter how many.
