Ottavio Bottecchia was the first Italian cyclist that won the Tour de France, wearing the yellow jersey from the first stage till the last one of the competition.
The career and the life of Ottavio Bottecchia ended early, the 15th June 1927 in Gemona del Friuli, near Udine, in an unclear situation. A strange accident, probably caused by a still-unexplained malaise, struck the 33 years old Ottavio while he was walking the familiar streets where he used to train and still today there are no certainties about it. What is sure is that a great champion died that day.
Teodoro Carnielli, an artisan from Vittorio Veneto was so fascinated by the natural talent of Ottavio that started manufacturing the bikes with his name on it exploiting the fame and notoriety of the boy, with the benefit of the royalties for him. Year by year the little laboratory of Carnielli become a company. Between 1930 and 1940 the employees become almost one hundred and they produce Bottecchia bicycles, Trionfo motorcycles and later Vittoria ones.
