A History of Colnago

Colnago is an Italian brand founded in 1952 by Ernesto Colnago, one of the pioneers and most innovative manufacturers of cycling history. He once stated that he ”was born to build bicycles”, and after working as an apprentice at the Gloria Bicycle factory in his early teens, he soon discovered his love for cycling – both in terms of engineering and racing. Alongside working as professional mechanic for several racing teams, Ernesto started producing his own high-end steel frames in Cambiago, Italy, even whilst he worked for the 1963 Molteni team with the legendary Eddy Merckx.

The relationship that the Colnago brand holds with success began in 1960, following Luigi Arienti’s win at the Rome Olympics on a frame made by Colnago. From here, the Colnago brand rose to fame and 10 years later, Michele Dancelli’s win at the 1970 Milan-San Remo inspired Ernesto to use the infamous Ace of Clubs symbol on his bicycles, a logo that is synonymous with title-winning bikes and is still used on every contemporary Colnago bicycle.

It wasn’t long after the Milan-San Remo of 1970 before the formidable pairing of Eddy Merckx and Ernesto Colnago was formed. Both Merckx and Ernesto were at the precipice of great success - athletically and mechanically – as Merckx won 50 palmarés whilst he trained on his custom built Colnago around the roads of his Belgian home. Most famously, Merckx’s special super-lightweight Colnago of 1972 was specifically designed to beat the hour record. It did so in style.

Colnago managed to avoid the lure of moving production abroad during the 1990s and early 2000s, as other mass-producing bicycle manufacturers began to outsource their factories to places like Taiwan. It wasn’t until 2006 that Colnago simply had to produce their lower-range carbon bicycles abroad due to mounting economic pressure. However, the most beautiful examples of Ernesto’s brand – like the C60 – are still made in Italy to this day. So, modern professional riders astride a Colnago frame know they are part of a long-lived history of mechanical prowess and human achievement.
